Tour overview
Kel-Suu is the hidden gem of Kyrgyzstan: a long, turquoise lake squeezed between vertical rock walls at about 3,500 metres, only a few kilometres from the Chinese border. Few places in Central Asia feel this remote. This private Kel-Suu lake tour takes you there by 4×4 from Bishkek, with nights in yurt camps and a stop at Tash Rabat, a 15th-century stone caravanserai on the Silk Road.
Kel-Suu sits inside the border zone, so a special permit is needed, the last stretch is off-road and there are no shops or hotels nearby. We arrange the permit, the 4×4, the driver who knows the track and the yurt camps, so the only thing you need to do is enjoy the view.

Why Kel-Suu is worth the journey
The name means “coming water”. The lake was formed when a landslide blocked the Kurumduk river, and its level rises and falls with the season: in summer the water reaches deep into narrow rock canyons, in some years almost disappearing by autumn. On a calm day the cliffs reflect perfectly in the turquoise water. You can walk along the shore, ride a horse to viewpoints above the lake or, when local boats are running, take a ride into the canyons.
Tash Rabat: a Silk Road caravanserai
On the way you stay near Tash Rabat, a stone caravanserai hidden in a quiet side valley at 3,200 metres. Merchants travelling between China and the Fergana valley sheltered here for centuries. It is one of the best-preserved Silk Road buildings in Kyrgyzstan, and the yurt camp next to it is a perfect place to adjust to the altitude before Kel-Suu.
What to expect on the road
This is a real off-road adventure. The paved road ends after Naryn and At-Bashy, and the last part to Kel-Suu is a rough gravel and dirt track through the Kok-Kiya valley, crossing rivers and high pastures. Days 1 and 4 involve long drives with stops at viewpoints, villages and Lake Issyk-Kul in the distance. Yurt camps are simple but warm, with shared toilets and home-cooked meals. Nights are cold even in summer, so bring warm layers.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit to visit Kel-Suu lake?
Yes. Kel-Suu is in the border zone with China, so every visitor needs a border zone permit. We apply for it for you: send us a clear passport copy at least 15 days before the tour. You must carry your original passport on the trip.
When is the best time to visit Kel-Suu?
June to September. The water level is usually highest in July and August, when the lake fills the canyons. In some autumns the water drains away, so we check the latest conditions with local herders before each trip.
Can Kel-Suu be visited in 3 days?
It is possible, but the drive back from Kel-Suu to Bishkek is over 10 hours. We split the route into 4 days with nights in Naryn, Tash Rabat and Kok-Kiya, so you enjoy the scenery instead of sitting in the car. A 3-day version is available on request.
Is the Kel-Suu tour suitable for families?
Yes, for children who are comfortable with long drives and simple yurt camps. There are no difficult hikes; the longest walk is about 1 hour each way to the lake, and horses can be arranged.
What is the altitude of Kel-Suu?
The lake lies at about 3,500 metres and Tash Rabat at 3,200 metres. Sleeping at Tash Rabat first helps you adjust. Nights are cold, so bring warm clothes even in summer.
How much does the Kel-Suu lake tour cost?
The 4-day private Kel-Suu lake tour costs from 520 USD per person for a group of 4, including 4x4 transport, guide, permit, yurt and guest house nights and full board.
