Our Song-Kul lake tour on horseback is one of the most authentic and affordable ways to discover Kyrgyzstan’s nomadic soul. Over 3 days and 2 nights you will ride local Kyrgyz horses across alpine pastures, cross two high passes, and sleep in traditional yurt camps right on the shore of Song-Kul Lake — Central Asia’s most beautiful high-altitude lake.
This Song-Kul lake tour is organized in partnership with local shepherd families from Kyzart village. They breed and train the horses, run the yurt camps and cook the meals you will share around the stove. By joining this trip you support community-based tourism directly, while experiencing a way of life that has not changed for centuries.
Why choose this Song-Kul lake tour on horseback
Song-Kul (also spelled Song-Köl or Song-Kol) sits at 3,016 m above sea level, surrounded by gentle green hills and snowy peaks. There are no roads circling it, no hotels, no shops — just yurts, horses and an endless sky. A horseback Song-Kul lake tour is the most natural way to reach it: the same way nomads have done it for generations. You can read more about Song-Kul lake and its nomadic traditions on our destinations page.

What to expect on the Song-Kul lake tour
The Song-Kul lake tour starts in Bishkek, where you are picked up early in the morning and driven to Kyzart village in the Naryn region. From there you switch to four legs and begin the real adventure. You will ride through the Bazar-Turuk gorge, climb the Tuz-Ashuu Pass at 3,200 m, descend to the shore of Song-Kul Lake for an unforgettable overnight stay in a yurt camp, and finally cross the Kok-Kiya Pass at 3,360 m on the way back to Kyzart.
Each day includes around 15 km of horseback riding at an easy pace, with regular breaks for photos, snacks and chatting with the local horsemen. Your guides know every trail and every family along the way — expect surprise stops for tea, fresh bread and homemade kymyz (fermented mare’s milk).
